Health Risk Factors
Alcohol consumption
In 2004–05, close to half (49%) of all Indigenous adults reported having consumed alcohol in the week prior to interview. Approximately a third of those who consumed alcohol reported drinking at risky/high risk levels (see Alcohol consumption risk level in the Glossary for details).
After adjusting for age differences, the proportion of Indigenous adults who reported drinking at risky/high risk levels (15%) was similar to that of non-Indigenous adults (14%).
The patterns of risky/high risk alcohol consumption by the Indigenous population differed for men and women and across age groups.
A higher proportion of Indigenous males than females had consumed alcohol at risky/high risk levels in the week before the survey, with the exception of those aged 55 and over.
Indigenous females reported their highest rates of risky/high risk consumption at an earlier age (25–34 years) than Indigenous males (35–44 years).
