ABOUT THIS RELEASE

The ABS has been undertaking investigations into using administrative data held by other government agencies to improve the range of small area data available to users of regional statistics. This Information Paper summarises some of this work and presents small area experimental estimates of the total number of wage and salary earners and their average wage and salary income for various levels of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification including Local Government Areas and Statistical Local Areas in each State and Territory of Australia for the years 1995-96 and 1996-97. Estimates for the total Metropolitan and Non-Metropolitan areas by State and Territory are also included. A series of detailed tables for the wage and salary earner population, including cross tabulations by variables such as sex, age, occupation, wage and salary income and total income, are available in ABS cat. no. 5673.0.55.001.

The estimates have been compiled from aggregated individual income tax data obtained from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). No information about individual taxpayers have been released to the ABS. The ABS wishes to acknowledge the support and assistance the ATO has provided in compiling these statistics.
