In Victoria, the largest number of registered campervans were located in Maribyrnong - with1,732 - with Greater Geelong coming in a distant second at 492, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This is just some of the regional data that can now be found through the new ABS data navigator, making it easy for local communities to view a wide range of different data for their area.

"The new Data by Region navigator provides an efficient and interactive way of accessing data", said Lisa Conolly from the ABS.

Data is available for hundreds of items including, population, births, average income levels, building approvals, number of aged pensioners, business counts, number of motor vehicles, land use, and much more.

For example, did you know that compared with the rest of Victoria:

• Whittlesea (2,735) and Wyndham (2,526) had the most building approvals for new private sector houses
• Mildura and South Gippsland had the most businesses involved in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, with 1,658 followed by Campaspe with 1,470
• Residents of Queenscliffe were the oldest (median age of 53.8 years) while those of Melbourne were the youngest (median age of 29.0 years)
• The highest fertility rates were recorded in Swan Hill, Corangamite and Loddon (with 2.6 per 1,000 population)
• The highest number of Carer payment recipients lived in Hume (4,090), Brimbank (3,312) and Casey (2,655)

Regional information is available over a five year period up to 2012, so local communities can track changes over time in the characteristics of their areas.
