Two months to go: Census results to be released 27 June

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will release the first results of last year's Census in two months time, on Wednesday 27 June, 2007.

Far more census data than ever before will be available free of charge, with the results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing being released on the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>.

According to the Head of Census, Paul Williams, there is a sense of eager anticipation in the community for the results.

"The information gathered on Census night last year is vital data which planners, policymakers, businesses and the wider community rely on in building a better Australia," Mr Williams said.

"Census information is behind many of the planning decisions used by communities in the provision of basic services. Planners and decision makers are very keen to use the data as soon as it is available," he said.

The ABS also expects many ordinary Australians will be interested in discovering what the Census shows about their own local community.

The ABS has developed a range of new web based products to allow simple and easy access to the results.

"We expect one of our new products, called Quickstats, will be very popular with visitors to the ABS website."

Quickstats presents a census snapshot of any region in Australia.

Australians can sample these new products now (using 2001 census data) by going to https://www.abs.gov.au/census.
