A regional look at South Australia

Salisbury Council recorded the largest population rise of all the local government areas in South Australia, with an increase of 1,322 people in 2001-2002 according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

Regional Statistics, South Australia, 2003 provides a comprehensive picture of all the regions within South Australia. It shows trends over the five years to 2002 and gives comparisons between local government areas (LGA).

Among the highlights in the publication:
  • Onkaparinga Council continues to be the local government area in South Australia with the greatest number of people (10% of the state’s population);
  • The fastest population increases over the 5 years were in Victor Harbor (2.9%) and Alexandrina, Kangaroo Island and Light, each with an increase of 2.7%;
  • Roxby Downs had the highest crude birth rate in 2001-02 (21.4 births per thousand population), while Victor Harbor had the lowest (5.1). The highest crude birth rate in the metropolitan area was in Playford (15.7);
  • The highest estimated unemployment rates, for the June quarter 2002, were in Peterborough (14.5%) and Coober Pedy (14.3%). The lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Kimba (0.8%), Tatiara (1.7%) and Le Hunte (1.9%). The state's unemployment rate was 6.7% for the same period;
  • Salisbury (1,124) and Onkaparinga (1,047) had the greatest number of approvals for new residential dwellings in the Adelaide SD. The value of these approvals was $120.3 million and $109.2 million respectively. The LGA outside the Adelaide SD with the greatest number of new residential dwellings approved was Alexandrina with 554 ($50.4 million);
  • The highest average residential property sale prices were recorded in Walkerville ($379,400) and Burnside ($299,500). The lowest average price for residential property sales in South Australia were in Peterborough ($33,600) and Le Hunte ($48,300); and
  • LGAs with major agricultural activity include Loxton Waikerie with a value of agricultural production in 2001 of $364 million, Yorke Peninsula ($232.7 million), Renmark Paringa ($206.2 million) and Tatiara ($195 million).
