Trend in new motor vehicle sales still slowing

The trend estimate for sales of new motor vehicles fell by 1.4% to 76,058 in December 2003 compared with November 2003. The trend estimate has fallen over the last four months following more than 12 months of consecutive growth.

Growth in the trend estimate of 6.7% was recorded for December 2003 when compared with December 2002. Sales of passenger vehicles increased by 4.5% and sales of other vehicles increased by 10.9% over the period.

The trend estimate for December 2003 fell when compared with November 2003, for all states/territories. Tasmania recorded the largest fall (2.6%).

The seasonally adjusted estimate for December 2003 decreased by 4.8% when compared with November 2003. The Australian Capital Territory was the only state/territory which recorded an increase (0.6%).
