National Diabetes Week - July 14 to 20
Do you have diabetes and don't know it?

It's National Diabetes Week and in the latest Australian Health Survey (AHS), the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found that just under one million Australians have been diagnosed with diabetes.

However, how many Australians have diabetes and aren't aware of it and how many are at risk of developing diabetes in the future?

These questions will be answered on 5 August 2013, when the ABS releases the results from the first ever biomedical component of the AHS.

Biomedical information was collected via voluntary blood and urine tests from over 11,000 people across Australia, and included tests for diabetes, cholesterol, liver function and kidney disease.

The results that will be released on 5 August will include brand new information on:
  • Liver disease
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Chronic Kidney Disease

The Health Survey results will also look at how lifestyle factors, such as overweight and obesity, are associated with these conditions.

Results will be available for download from the ABS website www.abs.gov.au from 11.30am on Monday 5 August.

This release is part of a series of publications derived from the results of the AHS. More information on the survey can be found at: www.abs.gov.au/australianhealthsurvey
