Broad Description
Census of life insurers and fund managers that measures financial product sales and sales personnel during the financial year 1995-96 by type of product and distribution channel used.

Purpose of Data
To provide baseline statistics on industry sales and distribution channel structure. The census will be repeated at regular intervals to track trends.

Detailed Description
Population
Life insurance companies, investment managers, bank assurances and friendly societies.
Superannuation Data Items

  • Amount of contributions from new business sales ($m) by type of product.
  • Amounts of all contributions from new and existing business ($m) by type of product.
  • Type of adviser/distribution channel through which new business sales were made by type of product.

Source
Questionnaires designed by LIMRA and distributed by financial service industry associations.

Method of Collection
Completed questionnaires received from 34 companies which represent 80% of the ISC-regulated single contribution business, 90% of the ISC-regulated regular contribution business, 50% of all IFA companies and 20% of assets held by friendly societies.

Frequency
Expected to be annually.

Timeliness
Future reports will cover the calendar (not financial) year. Results are available four to six months after the reference period.

Historical Data
The 1995-96 study was the first in what will be an annual survey.

Australia.

Confidentiality and Availability
Full report generally only available to participating companies. Summary statistics may be made available to other organisations on request. Data on individual companies not available due to confidentiality restrictions.
