Information obtained from income tax returns.

Purpose of Data
To provide information in respect of itemised information obtained from income tax returns.

Detailed Description
Population
Statistics are obtained from income tax returns and assessments processed in the 12 months following the end of the income year.
Superannuation Data Items
Separate statistics are provided for eligible termination payments which are 5 per cent assessable, those taxable at concessional rates and those taxable at other rates. Data are provided by grade of taxable income, number of taxpayers with the item in million dollar units.

Method of Collection
Information obtained from all income tax returns and assessments processed in the 12 months following the end of the income year.

Frequency
Annual.

Timeliness
Generally published October each year. That is about 18 months after the end of the income year to which the income tax returns relate.

Historical Data
Data are available from 1983-84 income year onwards. Note that if detailed data for a particular year are required it is necessary to refer to the appropriate edition of Taxation Statistics.

Geographic Breakdown
Data are available for Australia.

Confidentiality and Availability
Data are subject to confidentiality restrictions under the secrecy provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (as amended).
