DESCRIPTION


The Household Expenditure Survey (HES) collects details about the expenditure, income and household characteristics of a sample of households resident in private dwellings throughout Australia. The purposes of the survey are to:

    • identify the net levels and patterns of expenditure of Australian private households on a comprehensive range of goods and services purchased for private use;, and
    • determine how these levels and patterns vary according to income levels and other characteristics of households, such as size and composition, location and principal sources of cash income.

The latest survey was conducted from July 2003 to June 2004, with first data expected for release in 2005.

The following education-specific data items are available:

Household weekly expenditure
    • preschool
    • formal child care services
    • primary school fees (government, catholic, other independent school)
    • secondary school fees (government, catholic, other independent school)
    • TAFE fees
    • higher education fees
    • HECS
    • fees paid to other educational institutions.

Household characteristics
    • number of dependent children aged under 15
    • number of full-time and part-time students in household (aged 15-24, aged 25 and over)
    • number of persons attending preschool
    • number of persons attending primary school (government, catholic, other independent school)
    • number of persons attending secondary school (government, catholic, other independent school)
    • number of persons undertaking tertiary studies (full-time/part-time).

Person characteristics
    • part-time/full-time study status
    • whether study leads to a qualification
    • education institution attending
    • highest year of school completed
    • level of highest non-school qualification
    • main field of highest non-school qualification
    • level of highest educational attainment
    • main field of highest educational attainment.
