PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) is a hierarchical classification system of geographical areas and consists of a number of interrelated structures. It provides a common framework of statistical geography and enables the production of statistics which are comparable.

Date of effect of the ASGC 2006 is 1 July 2006 - it is the edition used for the 2006 Census of Population & Housing.

The product 1259.0.30.002 contains digital boundaries for the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) edition for the Census of Population & Housing. Boundaries are available for Census Collection District (CD) and higher level spatial units.

The digital boundaries are supplied in MapInfo Interchange format (.mid/.mif) and ESRI Shapefile (.shp) format. The digital boundaries are based upon the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA) 1994.

Any enquiries regarding the ASGC can be made by contacting the ABS via email geography@abs.gov.au
