WHOLESALE SALES
Data from the Australian Recording Industry Association Limited (ARIA) for the year ending December 2008 showed that the value of wholesale sales of sound recordings and music videos totalled $425.6m, down $36.6m (8%) on the $462.2m in 2007. Sales of CDs (singles and albums) accounted for 77% of total sales, down from 80% in 2007 and 85% in 2006. Music videos and DVDs accounted for a further 10%, down from 11% in 2007. Digital sales have increased markedly, from $7.9m in 2005 to $54.1m in 2008. Digital sales accounted for 13% by value of total music sales in 2008, up from 9% in 2007 and 5% in 2006.
