RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE

For ease of comparison, the index reference period for the CPI data used throughout this publication has been re-referenced to June quarter 1998 = 100.0. All index numbers and percentage changes shown are calculated on this basis. This may lead to some minor differences due to rounding from the figures published in Consumer Price Index, Australia (cat. no. 6401.0).

There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCIs and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.

Employee households

The ALCI for employee households rose 0.6% for the September quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in electricity, international holiday travel and accommodation, interest charges and rents. The major offsets were provided by audio visual and computing equipment, automotive fuel and pharmaceutical products,

The ALCI for employee households showed an equivalent rise to the CPI (re-referenced) (+0.6%) for the September quarter 2011. The rise in interest charges, which for conceptual reasons is not included in the CPI, was offset by employee households having a relatively lower expenditure weight for utilities than the CPI population, which saw increases in tariffs this quarter.

The ALCI for employee households rose 3.9% through the year to the September quarter 2011. This is a larger rise compared to the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.6%) through the year to the September quarter 2011.

Age pensioner households

The ALCI for age pensioner households rose 0.6% for the September quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in electricity, property rates and charges, water and sewerage and international holiday travel and accommodation. The major offsets were provided by pharmaceutical products and vegetables.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed an equivalent rise to the CPI (re-referenced) (+0.6%) for the September quarter 2011. Age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on utilities than the CPI population, which saw price rises this quarter. This was offset by age pensioner households having a higher weight for pharmaceutical products relative to the CPI population, which saw a fall due to a greater proportion of consumers exceeding the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme safety net compared to the June quarter 2011.

The ALCI for age pensioner households rose 4.1% through the year to the September quarter 2011. This is a larger rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.6%) through the year to the September quarter 2011.

Other government transfer recipient households

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households rose 0.6% for the September quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in electricity, rents, tobacco, water and sewerage and property rates and charges. The major offsets were provided by pharmaceutical products and automotive fuel.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed an equivalent rise to the CPI (re-referenced) (+0.6%) for the September quarter 2011. Other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher weight for electricity than the CPI population, which recorded a rise this quarter. This was offset by the ALCI population sub-group having a higher weight for pharmaceutical products and automotive fuel relative to the CPI population, which both saw falls this quarter.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households rose 4.1% through the year to the September quarter 2011. This is a larger rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.6%) through the year to the September quarter 2011.

Self-funded retiree households

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households rose 0.8% for the September quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in international holiday travel and accommodation, electricity, property rates and charges, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and water and sewerage. The major offsets were provided by pharmaceutical products and automotive fuel.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a larger rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+0.6%) for the September quarter 2011. Self-funded retiree households have a higher proportion of expenditure relative to the CPI population for both international holiday travel and accommodation and domestic holiday travel and accommodation, which saw rises this quarter. The rise in international holiday travel and accommodation was attributable to increased airfares to most surveyed destinations, coinciding with the shoulder/peak season in Asia and continuing peak season in Europe and North America. Airfares are collected in advance (at the time of payment), but only used in the ALCI in the quarter in which the trip is undertaken. International airfares are collected two months in advance (January for travel in March) and domestic airfares are collected one month in advance (January for February).

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households rose 3.8% through the year to the September quarter 2011. This is a larger rise through the year to the September quarter 2011 than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.6%).
