RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE

For ease of comparison, the index reference period for the CPI data used throughout this publication has been re-referenced to June quarter 1998 = 100.0. All index numbers and percentage changes shown are calculated on this basis. This may lead to some minor differences due to rounding from the figures published in Consumer Price Index, Australia (cat. no. 6401.0).

There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCIs and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.

Employee households

The ALCI for employee households rose 0.9% for the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, automotive fuel, mortgage interest charges, hospital and medical services and furniture. The major offsets were provided by vegetables, audio, visual and computing equipment and domestic holiday travel and accommodation.

The ALCI for employee households showed a smaller rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+1.0%) for the June quarter 2011. Employee households have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on fruit than the CPI population, which saw prices rise mainly attributable to an increase of approximately 138% in the price of bananas in the June quarter 2011 due to shortages created by Cyclone Yasi in February 2011. Employee households also have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on hospital and medical services, which saw price rises as a result of increases in the price of health fund premiums.

The ALCI for employee households rose 4.5% through the year to the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in mortgage interest charges, fruit, automotive fuel, tobacco, electricity and rents. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, motor vehicles and milk.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger rise compared to the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.7%) through the year to the June quarter 2011. Mortgage interest charges recorded a significant rise through the year to the June quarter 2011. For conceptual reasons this is not included in the CPI.

Age pensioner households

The ALCI for age pensioner households rose 0.9% for the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, automotive fuel, hospital and medical services and furniture. The major offsets were provided by vegetables and electricity.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a smaller rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+1.0%) for the June quarter 2011. Age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on electricity than the CPI population, which saw price falls in electricity due to the winter energy concession in Melbourne and seasonal off-peak pricing in Adelaide.

The ALCI for age pensioner households rose 4.4% through the year to the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, automotive fuel, electricity, tobacco and insurance. The major offsets were provided by milk and audio, visual and computing equipment.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.7%) through the year to the June quarter 2011. Compared to the wider CPI population group, age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on fruit and vegetables, utilities, insurance services and health services, all of which rose through the year to the June quarter 2011.

Other government transfer recipient households

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households rose 0.9% for the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, automotive fuel, rents, tobacco and furniture. The major offsets were provided by vegetables and electricity.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a smaller rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+1.0%) for the June quarter 2011. Other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher weight on electricity than the CPI population, which saw price falls in electricity due to the winter energy concession in Melbourne and seasonal off-peak pricing in Adelaide.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households rose 4.6% through the year to the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, tobacco, rents, automotive fuel, mortgage interest charges and electricity. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment and milk.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger rise than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.7%) through the year to the June quarter 2011. Compared to the wider CPI population group, other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on fruit and vegetables and tobacco, which rose through the year to the June quarter 2011. Mortgage interest charges also recorded a significant rise through the year to the June quarter 2011. For conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.

Self-funded retiree households

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households rose 1.0% for the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, hospital and medical services, automotive fuel and furniture. The major offsets were provided by vegetables and domestic holiday travel and accommodation.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed the same rise as the CPI (re-referenced) (+1.0%) for the June quarter 2011.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households rose 4.0% through the year to the June quarter 2011 mainly due to increases in fruit, automotive fuel, hospital and medical services, tobacco and electricity. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, overseas holiday travel and accommodation and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a larger rise through the year to the June quarter 2011 than the CPI (re-referenced) (+3.7%). Compared to the wider CPI population group, self-funded retiree households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on fruit and vegetables, automotive fuel and insurance services, all of which rose through the year to the June quarter 2011. Self-funded retiree households also recorded rises for health services through the year to the June quarter 2011 which can also be attributed to the relatively higher proportion of expenditure on this item compared to the wider CPI population group.
