STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

In the December quarter 2013, the Final demand index rose 0.2%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.3% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.3%. Through the year to the December quarter 2013, the Final demand index rose 1.9%, the Intermediate demand index rose 2.1% and the Preliminary demand index rose 2.2%.

The rise of 0.2% in the Final demand index in the December quarter 2013 reflected an increase of 0.3% in the prices of domestically produced products and a decrease of 0.7% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for other agriculture (+11.9%) and building construction (+0.4%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-5.7%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-3.0%), specialised machinery and equipment manufacturing (-1.2%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-4.6%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for other transport equipment manufacturing (+4.4%).

The rise of 0.3% in the Intermediate demand index in the December quarter 2013 reflected an increase of 0.4% in the prices of domestically produced products and a decrease of 0.1% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for meat and meat product manufacturing (+3.5%), other agriculture (+3.0%) and computer system design and related services (+1.6%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (-3.2%), oil and gas extraction (-2.4%) and coal mining (-3.4%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-3.9%), computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-3.1%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (-2.6%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+8.9%), log sawmilling and timber dressing (+5.1%) and natural rubber product manufacturing (+4.5%).

The rise of 0.3% in the Preliminary demand index in the December quarter 2013 reflected an increase of 0.3% in the prices of domestically produced products and an increase of 0.4% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for meat and meat product manufacturing (+5.7%), computer system design and related services (+1.6%) and legal and accounting services (+1.1%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for metal ore mining (-2.3%), coal mining (-3.4%) and oil and gas extraction (-2.4%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+9.0%), other transport equipment manufacturing (+6.5%) and log sawmilling and timber dressing (+5.1%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for metal ore mining (-5.4%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-3.1%).
