PARTICIPATION IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

Latest data

Data from the 2011-12 Survey of Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation (cat. no. 4177.0) was published in December 2012.

The 2011-12 survey was conducted by the ABS with the support of the Committee of Australian Sport and Recreation Officials. The survey will now be conducted biennially rather than every four years which will provide a regular measure of sports participation.

According to the latest survey results, almost two thirds (65%) of Australians aged 15 years and over participated in physical activities for recreation, exercise or sport. Walking for exercise was the most popular activity while Fitness/Gym, Cycling, Swimming/Diving and Tennis were among the top ten activities for both men and women.
