STATE SUMMARY

Tasmania's estimated resident population grew by 39,400 people to reach 511,200 in the decade ending June 2011, an increase of 8.4%. This was a slower rate of growth than Australia as a whole (15%) and the lowest of all states and territories, equal with South Australia.

REGIONAL VARIATIONS

Tasmania is unique among the states and territories in that population growth between June 2001 and June 2011 in the remainder of the state (21,400 people), was larger than that in the greater capital city (18,000). Tasmania also had the highest proportion of its population residing outside of it's greater capital city (58%) of all states and territories at June 2011.

Between 2001 and 2011, the population of all four Tasmanian SA4s increased. The largest growth was in Hobart (up 18,000 people), followed by Launceston and North East (10,400), West and North West (7,100), and South East (3,800). The fastest growth was in South East (11.4%), followed by Hobart (9.1%), Launceston and North East (7.8%), and West and North West (6.7%).


Hobart

The largest and fastest growing Tasmanian SA2s in the ten years to June 2011 were located within Hobart. In Hobart's south, Kingston - Huntingfield had the largest growth, increasing by 2,600 people, followed by Margate - Snug (2,000). Brighton - Pontville, in Hobart's north, increased by 1,700 people. The fastest growing SA2s were Brighton - Pontville which grew by 55%, Margate - Snug (37%) and Austins Ferry - Granton (36%). The fastest declines within Hobart were in Derwent Park - Lutana (down 5.6%), Montrose - Rosetta (down 3.8%) and Bellerive - Rosny (down 2.5%).


Launceston and North East

Of the SA2s located within Launceston and North East, the largest growth over the ten year period to June 2011 was in the southern suburbs of Youngtown - Relbia (up 1,100 people), the northern suburbs of Newnham - Mayfield (1,100), and Legana (990), to the north-west of Launceston. The fastest growing areas were Legana, which grew by 35%, Youngtown - Relbia (30%), and to the south-west of Launceston, Prospect Vale - Blackstone (17%). Scottsdale - Bridport, which includes the Furneaux Group of Islands, declined by 310 people (or 3.7%).


West and North West

In the ten years to June 2011, the largest growth in West and North West was in Port Sorell, which grew by 1,200 people. This was followed by the SA2s of Parklands - Camdale (up 950 people) in Burnie, and Sheffield - Railton (900). The fastest population growth was in Port Sorell (30%), followed by Miandetta - Don (up 18%) on Devonport’s outskirts, and Latrobe (17%). The population of West Coast declined by 610 people (or 11%) between 2001 and 2011.


South East

Within South East, all SA2s experienced population growth in the ten years to June 2011. The largest growth was in Huonville - Franklin (up 1,300 people), followed by Southern Midlands (510), and Cygnet (440), on the Huon Estuary. Huonville - Franklin also had the fastest growth (20%), followed by Bruny Island - Kettering (15%) and Cygnet (12%).

CENTRE OF POPULATION

Tasmania's centre of population at June 2011 was on the banks of Woods Lake in the Central Highlands SA2. In the ten years to 2011, the centre moved 1.2 kilometres south-east, reflecting continued population growth in Greater Hobart.

For Greater Hobart, the centre of population at June 2011 was near the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, in the suburb of Queens Domain.
