AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY STATISTICAL SUBDIVISIONS The three northern SSDs experienced the largest population growth in 2007-08. The outer northern SSD of Gungahlin-Hall grew by 2,900 people (8.2%), Belconnen SSD by 1,000 people (1.1%) and North Canberra SSD by 770 people (1.7%). The population of the southern SSD of Tuggeranong decreased by 590 people or 0.7%. POPULATION GROWTH Growth in the ACT In 2007-08 the four SLAs that experienced the largest growth in the ACT were in the northern suburbs of Canberra. On the northern edge of Canberra, in the Gungahlin-Hall SSD, Harrison had the largest population increase of 1,500 people. The nearby SLAs of Gungahlin (500) and Amaroo (260) also recorded large increases. The population of Bruce, which is on the eastern fringe of Belconnen SSD, increased by 810 people. Growth in the surrounding region Population growth continued in 2007-08 in NSW LGAs located on the borders of the ACT, from which many people commute to work in Canberra. The population of Queanbeyan (C) increased by 700, Palerang (A) by 390 and Yass Valley (A) by 230 people. POPULATION DECREASES While most SLAs in the ACT experienced population increases in 2007-08, population decreases occurred in about one-third of the SLAs in the ACT. The largest population declines occurred in the outer southern SLAs of Kambah (260 people) and Wanniassa (160 people). Kaleen in Belconnen SSD experienced a decrease of 110 people.
CENTRE OF POPULATION The centre of population in the Australian Capital Territory as at June 2008 was located near the Royal Canberra Golf Course, in the suburb of Yarralumla. The centre of population has moved 0.6 kilometres north since June 2003, reflecting the strong population growth occurring in the north, particularly in the Gungahlin-Hall SSD.
