EXERCISE LEVELS

The 2011-12 ABS National Health Survey collected data about people's level of exercise undertaken for fitness, recreation or sport in the last week. The first release of this data has been included in the ABS (2012a) publication Australian Health Survey: First Results, 2011-12 (cat. no. 4364.0.55.001).

In the week prior to interview, 21% of respondents aged 15 years or over had been involved in some form of moderate exercise (exercise which caused a moderate increase in heart rate or breathing) and 12% were doing vigorous exercise (exercise which caused a large increase in heart rate or breathing).

More women than men had low exercise levels (35% and 28% respectively). Women were also more likely than men to report being sedentary (38% compared with 33%). Men were more likely than women to do moderate exercise (23% compared with 19%) and vigorous exercise (16% compared with 8%).
