CHANGES IN THE PRISONER POPULATION

Between 2011 and 2012, the prisoner population increased in all states and territories, except New South Wales and Tasmania. The highest proportional increases in prisoner numbers were for the Northern Territory (11%), Western Australia (7%) and the Australian Capital Territory (4%). The prisoner population decreased by 4% in New South Wales and by 3% in Tasmania between 2011 and 2012. (Based on Table 3.5)
