INTRODUCTION

About this publication

This publication presents final estimates of the level of foreign ownership of agricultural businesses, agricultural land and water entitlements used for agriculture in Australia. The data were collected in the Agricultural Land and Water Ownership Survey (ALWOS) conducted in March 2011, with data requested as at 31 December 2010.

Following the introduction of the Foreign Acquisitions Amendment (Agricultural Land) Bill in late 2010, which sought to amend the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 to enable greater scrutiny of potential foreign investment of agricultural land, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) was asked to collect information on the level of foreign ownership of agricultural businesses, land and water entitlements used for agricultural activity to inform government policy. The ALWOS estimates provide information on the extent of foreign ownership in Australian agriculture.

Additional content is attached to this publication in data cubes, and is accessible via the downloads tab. These data cubes present a more comprehensive account of the levels of foreign ownership in agricultural businesses, agricultural land and water entitlements used for agriculture in Australia, by state/territory and by industry group.

The Agricultural Land and Water Ownership Survey December 2010

The ALWOS collected data from businesses which were undertaking agricultural activity, and which owned agricultural land and water entitlements used for agriculture but operated by others. The population for the survey was approximately 165,000 businesses identified from the ABS Business Register (ABSBR). A sample of approximately 11,000 businesses were surveyed for the ALWOS. The ALWOS was designed to produce national level estimates, with state/territory estimates and estimates by agricultural industry group provided where available. The frame for the ALWOS was the same as that used for the Agricultural Census. For more information, please refer to the Explanatory Notes.

The estimates produced from the ALWOS are classified using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006.
