OTHER TYPES OF THEFT

Other types of theft include any unlawful taking of money or goods (other than from motor vehicles owned by a household member) without the use, or threat, of force or violence, coercion or deception and with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of the money or goods. It includes:
    · Any theft of property belonging to a member of the household not previously covered by the other types of crime included in this publication (for example, theft of property left in a public location).
    · Property belonging to a household member stolen from a vehicle not owned by a household member.
    · Property stolen from a yard or garden (for example, statues or plants).
It excludes any incidents involving theft covered in other sections of the survey, such as robberies, break-ins, motor vehicle theft or theft from a motor vehicle. Other types of theft incidents are considered to be household crimes for the purpose of this survey.

In the 12 months prior to interview, an estimated 488,100 incidents of other theft were experienced by 284,100 (3.3%) Australian households in 2011–12. 38% of victims of other types of theft had the most recent incident they experienced reported to the police.

The other types of theft victimisation rate for Tasmania (4.3%) was higher than the national average (3.3%) and higher than for NSW (2.7%) and South Australia (3.2%).

The other types of theft victimisation rate for NSW (2.7%) was lower than the national average (3.3%) and lower than the rates for Victoria (3.6%), Western Australia (3.7%), Tasmania (4.3%), the Northern Territory (4.0%) and ACT (3.9%).
