Males comprised 93% (27,182) of the total prisoner population at 30 June 2012, while females comprised 7% (2,201).

The imprisonment rate for males at 30 June 2012 was 315 prisoners per 100,000 adult males, approximately 13 times the rate for females (25 female prisoners per 100,000 adult females). (Table 2.3)

Between 2002 and 2012, the total number of prisoners increased 31%, from 22,492 to 29,381. Over the same period, the number of male prisoners increased 29% (from 21,008 to 27,182) and the number of female prisoners increased by 48% (from 1,484 to 2,199). (Table 2.2)
