Results from the 2005-06 Survey of Income and Housing were released in August, providing estimates of the income, net worth and other characteristics of households and persons living in private dwellings in Australia.

Key results from the 2005-06 survey are:
  • Over the last eleven years to 2005-06, there was a 31% increase in the real mean income of low income people, compared to 32% for middle income people and 36% for high income people.
  • Mean incomes in Australian capital cities were 16% above those outside capital cities.
  • Mean incomes in NSW were 2% above the national average, and mean incomes in Sydney were 5% above the capital city average.
  • The wealthiest 20% of Australian households in 2005-06 accounted for 61% of total household net worth, with average net worth of $1.7 million per household.
  • The poorest 20% of households accounted for 1% of total household net worth and had an average net worth of $27,000 per household.
