Imprisonment rates

At 30 June 2015, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait imprisonment rate (prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population):
    • increased from 2,175 at 30 June 2014 to 2,253. The non-Indigenous imprisonment rate increased from 138 to 146 prisoners per 100,000 non-Indigenous population.
    • increased in New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory; and decreased in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.
    • was highest in Western Australia (3,621), followed by the Northern Territory (2,886). (Table 19)
    • when age standardised, was 13 times greater than the age standardised imprisonment rate for non-Indigenous persons (1,951 compared to 153). (Table 16)
