(a) Data downloaded is reported for the three month period prior to the reference date.

At 30 June 2012 there were 16.2 million mobile handset subscribers in Australia, an increase of 7% from 15.2 million subscribers at the end of December 2011.

Previously, these data were reported by whether the access connection was via a dedicated data subscription or all other standard mobile subscriptions. Due to reporting issues, these data are now published as a combined total. It should be noted that dedicated data subscriptions are becoming less common.

Mobile handset subscriber downloads

ISPs were also asked to estimate, for the three months ended 30 June 2012, the volume of data downloaded by subscribers with internet access connections via a mobile handset.

Data reported by ISPs for the volume of data downloaded via mobile handsets may only include revenue generating downloads, and not monthly data allowances, or downloads that don't contribute to data download allowances.

The volume of data downloaded via mobile handsets, for the three months ended 30 June 2012, was 6,610 Terabytes, an increase of 32% from the three months ended 31 December 2011.
