INTRODUCTION

In this issue

This publication presents information from the December 2013 Internet Activity Survey (IAS). The IAS is conducted biannually in respect of the end of June and December in each year and collects details on aspects of internet access services provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Australia. This release contains data from ISPs with more than 1,000 subscribers operating in Australia as at 31 December 2013.

The ABS counts subscribers that have an internet connection with an ISP on the last day of the reference period. ABS subscribers statistics measure the number of 'subscriber lines' rather than the number of 'users' and therefore counts of subscribers are not the same as counts of people / organisations with internet access. This is because some subscribers may have accounts with more than one ISP or multiple accounts with a single ISP. Conversely, there are single ISP subscriber accounts that provide internet access for multiple people / organisations (for example, universities).

Data presented in this publication includes: internet subscriber numbers by type of access connection and advertised download speed; number of ISPs; subscriber sector; volume of data downloaded; and number of mobile handset subscribers.

Mobile handset subscriber numbers and associated data download volumes are reported in a separate chapter. All other data reported in this release excludes mobile handsets.

Data quality

Information about data quality provided in the Explanatory Notes and Quality Declaration must be taken into consideration when interpreting the statistics in this release.

Revisions

Revisions have been made to June 2013 data. These revisions have affected counts of subscribers by sector by advertised download speed. The changes are reflected in the relevant tables and data cubes. As a result of these revisions, the data cubes related to the Census of ISPs have been included in this publication.

The revisions have not impacted on counts of the total number of internet subscribers by sector.

Structure of this release

There are two components to this release: web based information and data cubes. The data cubes contain the detailed data that underpins the tables and commentary included in the web based information.

Rounding

Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of components and the total. Proportions have been calculated using rounded data.
