WHEAT

In 2010-11, total wheat production in Australia was 27.4 million tonnes which is the highest production year since the collection started in 1861. The area of land under cultivation for wheat in 2010-11 was 13.5 million hectares, a slight decrease from the historical high of 13.9 million hectares in 2009-10.

Around the states, wheat production and area vary significantly but tend to have a similar ratio between production and land. However, in recent years production has increased at greater levels than area. In New South Wales and Victoria this occurred during the 1960s. In Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia it was in the 1980s and in Tasmania it was the 1990s.
