The 2012 PSS collects information about a person's experience of violence, since the age of 15, by a partner. The term 'partner' in the PSS is used to describe a person the respondent currently lives with, or lived with at some point, in a married or de facto relationship. Partner violence does not include violence by a "boyfriend/girlfriend or date" (Refer Endnote 1). PREVALENCE OF PARTNER VIOLENCE Table C (below) provides a summary of men's and women's experience of violence by a current and previous partner since the age of 15 and in the 12 months prior to the survey. The information within this table is from Table 3, Table 4 and Table 5. This table shows information about the different types of violence men and women experienced by a current and/or previous partner since the age of 15. It is possible that people experienced multiple types of violence by a current and by a previous partner. Where a person experienced more than one type of violence or violence by both a current and a previous partner, they are counted separately for each type of violence experienced but are only counted once in the totals. Components therefore may not add to the totals.

In the 12 months prior to the survey an estimated 132,500 women (1.5% of all women aged 18 years and over) had experienced violence by a partner compared to 51,800 men (0.6% of all men aged 18 years and over). For the purposes of the PSS current and previous partner have been defined as follows: Current partner: The person the respondent currently lives with in a married or de facto relationship. Previous partner: A person the respondent lived with at some point in a married or de facto relationship from who the respondent is now separated. This includes a partner the respondent was living with at the time of experiencing violence; or a partner the respondent was no longer living with at the time of experiencing violence. Partner violence Refers to any incident of sexual assault, sexual threat, physical assault or physical threat by a current and/or previous partner. Partner violence does not include violence by a "boyfriend/girlfriend or date". For the PSS a boyfriend/girlfriend or date refers to a person the respondent dated, or was intimately involved with but did not live with.
