RECONCILIATION OF CURF DATA AGAINST PUBLISHED ESTIMATES

The PSS 2012 CURF is released under the provisions of the Census and Statistics Act 1905. This legislation allows the Australian Statistician to release unit record data, or microdata, provided that it is done "in a manner that is not likely to enable the identification of a particular person or organisation to which it relates".

The ABS ensures confidentiality of the data by:

    • removing name, address and any other information that might uniquely identify an individual;
    • changing a small number of values, particularly unusual values;
    • reducing the level of detail available for some data items on the CURF;
    • excluding some data items that were collected; and
    • controlling the modes of access and restrict access to more detailed data.

As a result, data on the CURF will not exactly match other previously published estimates. Any changes to the distribution of values are not significant and the statistical validity of aggregate data has not been affected.

Further documentation about data item code values and category labels on each level of the PSS CURF, with weighted and unweighted frequencies for each value are also available on the RADL:
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12PER.xls contains frequencies for the Person level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12PRV.xls contains frequencies for the Violence prevalence level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12MRI.xls contains frequencies for the Violence most recent incident level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12PAR.xls contains frequencies for the Violence partner level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12EMAB.xls contains frequencies for the Violence Emotional abuse by a partner level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12ABU.xls contains frequencies for the Abuse before the age of 15 level data
    • FREQUENCIES_PSS12STK.xls contains frequencies for the Stalking level data

This information can be used by registered CURF users to reconcile and confirm that any data extracted from the CURF has included the correct records.

In addition, an example table has also been included on the RADL: Example Tables PSS12 CURF.xls . This document includes an example table (for each level of the file) of: the weighted estimates; the sample counts; and the relative standards errors calculated from the CURF for at least one item on each level. This document will allow CURF users to check that they are extracting the correct data for any particular level from the CURF and are calculating the associated RSEs correctly.
