What is the Crime Victimisation Survey TableBuilder?

TableBuilder is now available for Crime Victimisation, Australia microdata for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 publications:

TableBuilder is an online tool for creating tables and graphs using detailed ABS microdata. Clients can build, customise, save and export their own tables and graphs in TableBuilder.

Features include:

    • construct your own tables using data variables you select
    • options to display counts, percentages and relative standard errors in your table
    • select from categorical variables (eg state, age, sex)
    • calculate means, medians and quantiles for continuous variables (eg income)
    • create custom ranges from continuous variables
    • create graphs using your customised tables
    • save or export your tables as CSV, Excel or SDMX files.
Detailed information relating to TableBuilder and instructions on how to use features of the TableBuilder product can be found in User Manual: TableBuilder, 2013 (cat. no. 1406.0.55.005). It is important to read this user guide to understand the data items, definitions and file structure.

How do I access TableBuilder?

Register your details within the Registration Centre (the ABS online registration system for products including TableBuilder, DataAnalyser and Census DataPacks) and set up a username and password.

Login to your account and apply for access to datasets. If you are part of an organisation that has arranged access to datasets you can apply to join your organisation through your account. Your organisation’s contact officer will be asked to confirm your membership.

Once you have set up your account, been approved as a member of your organisation, and been approved access to your selected datasets, you can login to TableBuilder. Your selected datasets will appear in the left hand pane:

How much does it cost?

Access to the Crime Victimisation datasets are a paid service. Access to each dataset costs $925 (incl. GST) per organisation. For more information please see Microdata Prices.

Staff and students of universities participating in the ABS/Universities Australia Agreement will not be invoiced. This is because Universities Australia has paid for access on behalf of participating universities.

How can I use this data?

Crime Victimisation Survey TableBuilder can be used to answer research questions that may not be able to be addressed by the published data cubes. Crime Victimisation Survey TableBuilder may help explore research questions such as:

    • What are the experiences of assault by men and women of different ages?
    • How do the demographic characteristics of victims who did and did not tell police about their crime differ?
    • What are the socio-demographic characteristics of victims who experienced multiple incidents of assault in the last 12 months?
    • What is the relationship between household income and experience of break-in or attempted break-in?
