INTRODUCTION

This publication presents information about the Australian Health Survey (AHS) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in 2011-13. It contains information about:

• survey objectives;
• how the surveys were developed;
• concepts and methods;
• procedures used in the collection of data and derivation of estimates; and
• quality, interpretation and availability of survey results.

The aim of this publication is to assist users of the data to better understand both the nature of the survey and its potential and shortcomings in meeting their data needs. Survey questionnaires and a list of output data items currently available from the survey can be found in the Downloads tab of this publication.

As data from the AHS are scheduled to be released progressively throughout 2012 to 2014, accompanying explanatory material for each release will be added to this publication as it becomes available.
