AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Births

OVERVIEW

Registration of births is the responsibility of individual state and territory Registrars and is based on the data provided on an information form completed by at least one of the parents. This information form is the basis of the data provided to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for processing and production of birth statistics. Information is provided to the ABS on a monthly basis.

Statistical information on births provides input into population estimates. These estimates contribute to the basis for the distribution of seats in the House of Representatives between the states and the distribution of Commonwealth funds to the states. This information is also important for understanding issues associated with fertility.

The ABS has had responsibility to produce population estimates since its establishment, and births statistics have been an integral part of this process. State and national birth data date back to at least 1860, while birth data are available in electronic form from 1975, inclusive.
