AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Families

OVERVIEW

The Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Families (LFSOCF) data are collected as part of the monthly Labour Force Survey. In this dataset, family type is derived from questions which establish the relationships between members of the households selected in the survey. Relationship in household and families data are collected each month in the Labour Force Survey, however estimates of children aged 0–4 years, 5–9 years and 10–14 years in families are only available from the month of June.

Annual datacubes were first published in June 2005, with data available back to June 1994, in Labour Force, Australia: Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Families - Electronic Delivery (cat. no. 6224.0.55.001). The datacubes present information on the labour force status of persons and the types of families to which they belonged. Information is also provided on the number and age of children in the household.

The standard products don't include data items relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity, but data items collected for the LFSOCF topic are capable of being cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity.

The LFS is conducted as part of the Monthly Population Survey program which collects data on particular aspects of the labour force. In most months the LFS includes a supplementary survey topic. A list of these supplementary surveys is available from Labour Statistics: Concepts, Sources and Methods (cat. no. 6102.0.55.001).
