AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Survey of Disability, Ageing, and Carers (SDAC)

OVERVIEW

The Survey of Disability, Ageing, and Carers (SDAC) collects information on three population groups: people aged 60 and over, people with disabilities and their carers.

Topics covered include the assistance requirements of these groups, the extent to which these requirements are met, and the characteristics of those with unmet need. It also provides information on participation in economic and community activities. The SDAC is the major source of national statistics on carers and primary carers: numbers and characteristics of carers, care relationships, activities for which informal care is provided, and, for primary carers, support available and required, and the effects of the caring role on their lives.

The aims of the SDAC were to measure the prevalence of disability in Australia and consequent need for support, provide a demographic and socioeconomic profile of people with disabilities and older people compared with the general population, and provide information about people who provide care to those with disabilities.

Data collected from the SDAC enable government departments to plan and develop relevant policies and form the basis for allocation of funds.

The data items included in each datacube are not exhaustive, but rather a selection of the data available. Care must be taken in comparing data from different collections presented in the Matrices due to differences in survey methodology, definitions and reference periods.

Additional data are also available in the publication Disability, Ageing and Carers, Australia: Summary of Findings (cat. no. 4430.0).
