HIGH CENSUS NIGHT RATIOS, QUEENSLAND

In 2011, Queensland had almost a third of the high Census Night ratio LGAs (14 out of 46) and some of the highest Census Night ratios in Australia. High Census Night ratios were found in tourist areas such as Cairns, Barcaldine, Carpentaria, Central Highlands, Flinders and Longreach, and mining areas such as Cloncurry, Isaac, Mt Isa, Paroo and Weipa.

The Census Night population of Carpentaria had a large number of people over the age of 50, as shown in the population pyramid below. These may be retired travellers: commonly known as "grey nomads" (see ABS Review of Counting the Homeless Methodology 2011, cat. no. 2050.0.55.002, for details on how this population is defined by ABS). Other LGAs that also had relatively large numbers of people aged over 50 years in the Census Night population included Longreach and Flinders in Queensland and Exmouth and Northampton in Western Australia.
