Purpose
To provide data on personal travel patterns in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Region (GSMR) to assist transport and land use policy and planning.

Description
The Home Interview was conducted in 1981 and 1991-92 to update information obtained by the 1971 Sydney Area Transportation Study on personal travel patterns within the GSMR.

For the 1991-92 survey, data were collected by personal interview of 12,000 households in respect of the nominated travel day.

The Household Travel Survey (HTS), which collects travel information for the nominated 24-hour period for all members of selected households, commenced in June 1997. Data are collected by personal interview of about 5,000 households annually.

Household data:

  • Dwelling structure;
  • Household type;
  • Number of permanent residents;
  • Number and characteristics of vehicles; and
  • Number of bicycles.

Person data:
  • Sex;
  • Age;
  • Driver's licence;
  • Employment status;
  • Occupation;
  • Employment industry;
  • Income;
  • School/childcare details;
  • Restricted mobility; and
  • Country of birth.

Travel data:
  • Trip origin;
  • Destination;
  • Trip purpose;
  • Mode of travel;
  • Start/finish time;
  • Fare type;
  • Ticket type;
  • Vehicle occupancy;
  • Vehicle ownership;
  • Who paid for fuel used; and
  • Type of parking and who paid for parking.

Geographic Coverage
Sydney Statistical Division for 1981 survey, and GSMR (Sydney SD, Newcastle SSD and Illawarra SD excluding part of Shoalhaven) for 1991 and 1997 surveys.

Frequency of Data Availability
The 1981 and 1991 surveys were one-off collections. The first wave of a new continuous Household Travel Survey commenced in June 1997.

Historical Data
Data are available for 1971, 1981, 1991.
