1. The standard variable 'Year non-school qualification completed' identifies the year in which a non-school qualification was completed. It is used as an indicator of the currency of the non-school qualifications of the population, and more specifically to help determine the level of attainment of diplomas and certificates. It must be collected to code data on non-school qualifications accurately to the Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED) (cat. no. 1272.0).

2. This standard variable should be used for all collections which aim to identify Level of Education variables. The 'Year non-school qualification completed' is essential for determining the level of 'Diplomas' and 'Certificates'. Other related standard variables are the 'Level of highest educational attainment', 'Level of highest non-school qualification', 'Highest year of school completed', 'Main field of highest educational attainment' and 'Main field of highest non-school qualification'.
