27. The method of obtaining data on 'Highest year of school completed' is direct question.

Interviewer-based collections

28. For interviewer-based collections, 'Highest year of school completed' uses the following recommended question module:

Q1. What was the highest year of primary or secondary school [you] [the person] [(name)] completed?
Year 12 or equivalent
Year 11 or equivalent
Year 10 or equivalent
Year 9 or equivalent
Year 8 or below
Never attended school


Self-completed collections

29. For self-completed collections, 'Highest year of school completed' uses the following recommended question module:

Q1What is the highest year of primary or secondary school [you have] [the person has] completed?
Mark one box only
For persons who returned after a break to complete their schooling, mark the highest year completed when they last left.
Year 12 or equivalent
Year 11 or equivalent
Year 10 or equivalent
Year 9 or equivalent
Year 8 or below
Did not go to school



STANDARD INPUT CATEGORIES

30. The standard input categories for the 'Highest year of school completed' question module are the base level categories of the ASCED Level of Education Classification and are represented by their three-digit codes. For operational reasons, supplementary codes also exist where, for example, responses are to be aggregated to a 'Year 8 or below' category. The input category 'Year 8 or below' with the code 067 is an aggregation of the ASCED Detailed Levels 623 and 624, and the Narrow Level 71. A list of valid standard input codes is provided at Appendix A.
