Australia's community services expenditure

During 1995-96, Australia's community service organisations spent a total of $9,705 million on provision of community service and related activities, according to preliminary figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The publication Community Services, Australia 1995-96 (cat. no. 8694.0) reveals that $8,946 million was spent on direct community service provision and a further $759 million was spent on community service related activities.

The major areas of expenditure on direct community service provision were residential care and accommodation support ($5,062 million), personal and social support ($1,526 million) and child care ($1,043 million). "Not for profit" organisations accounted for 51 per cent ($4,520 million) of all expenditure on direct community service provision while Government organisations accounted for 29 per cent ($2,585 million).

At the end of June 1996, there were 8,036 employing businesses and organisations carrying out these community service activities. Of these, 5,385 businesses and organisations (67 percent) were "not for profit" organisations. Of the remainder, 2,228 (28 per cent) were "for profit" organisations and 423 (5 per cent) were government organisations.

These businesses and organisations employed 327,902 persons at the end of June 1996, of which 233,406 employees (71 per cent) were directly involved in the provision of community services. A further 284,547 volunteers assisted these businesses and organisations in the provision of community services in the month of June 1996.

There were 7,300 private sector businesses and organisations whose main activity was the provision of community services. The main sources of income for these businesses and organisations was government funding of $3,977 million (53 per cent) and income from services to clients and other organisations of $2,037 million (27 per cent). The major expense item of these businesses and organisations was labour costs ($4,624 million) which accounted for 65 per cent of total expenses.
