SELECTED ABS MINING RELATED STATISTICAL PUBLICATIONS

Here is a selection of mining statistical publications by the ABS. For further information, please refer to the mining theme page.

Australian Industry (8155.0)

Presents operational and financial performance estimates of the mining industry derived using a combination of data from the Economic Activity Survey and business tax data sourced from the Australian Tax Office. For most industry divisions and subdivisions (as specified in the Australian and New Zealand Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition), estimates at a national level are presented for: employment; income; expenses; industry value added; operating profit before tax; capital expenditure; and selected components of these aggregates and derivations. State/territory estimates of income, employment, and wages and salaries, at the division level are also included.

In addition, a supplementary data cube presenting information on mineral production, based on data provided by the various state and Northern Territory governments, is made available a few months after the initial release. Note: From 2007-08, this publication includes previous time series from the discontinued publication Mining Operations, Australia (8415.0) see below .


Mineral and Petroleum Exploration, Australia (8412.0)

Actual and expected expenditure by private organisations exploring for minerals and petroleum. Mineral exploration expenditure is classified by state and commodity, and data are provided on metres drilled. Petroleum exploration expenditure is classified by onshore/offshore, and from the September quarter 1994, by region.


Mining Operations, Australia (8415.0) -- ceased

Presents national estimates, for the mining industry, of employment and major economic and financial aggregates: income and expenditure; various profit measures; industry value added; capital expenditure, and components of these, as well as performance measures (ratios) derived from them. State and territory estimates of major variables (for the industry excluding services to mining) are included. Summary estimates of the value of mineral production by state and for the Northern Territory, drawn from their administrative sources, will no longer be included. Detailed estimates of the quantity and value of mineral production, by state and for the Northern Territory, will be available on spreadsheets to be released subsequently. Note: The 2006-07 edition was the final issue and the data will now be found in Australian Industry (8155.0).


Mining Indicators (8417.0)

Mining Indicators presents key performance indicators of the Australian mining industry, including income from sales, inventories, employment, exploration expenditure, lost time injuries and overseas mineral exploration expenditure. The product contains three tables; one table highlighting quarterly indicators, the other two annual indicators (split into financial and calendar years). These indicators are sourced from ABS and non-ABS data.


Balance of Payments and International Investment Position (5302.0)

Provides detailed quarterly balance of payments tables on current, capital and financial transactions for the latest six quarters, including seasonally adjusted, trend and chain volume measures of the current account. It also provides a complete international investment position statement with details of the level of investment, investment flows and associated income. Detailed information is also provided on Australia's foreign debt. It includes longer term historical series, exchange rates, analytical ratios, analytical comment, graphs of principal aggregates as well as articles of interest and a list of such articles published in recent related publications.


International Trade in Goods and Services (5368.0)

Provides estimates for 15 months of the major aggregates for, and the balance on, international trade in goods and services (balance of payments basis) in both seasonally adjusted and trend estimates terms. Longer term graphs are provided, in seasonally adjusted and trend estimates terms, for the goods and services aggregates, and the balance on goods and services. In addition it provides more detailed commodity statistics for both goods and services in original terms, with goods provided on balance of payments and international trade basis, together with year-to-date information. More detailed services statistics, in seasonally adjusted and trend terms on a monthly basis as well as original terms on a quarterly basis are also provided. Merchandise imports and exports are provided at one and two digit SITC level with selected commodities at three digit level. Merchandise trade data are provided by country and by state. Data on exchange rates and analytical comments are included.
