HOUSEHOLD INTERNET AND COMPUTER ACCESS

This section presents detailed household data on internet and computer access from the 2010-11 MPHS.


HOUSEHOLDS WITH HOME INTERNET ACCESS

In 2010-11, 79% of Australian households had access to the internet at home. Household internet access by State or Territory ranged from 88% for the Australian Capital Territory to 70% for Tasmania.

Home internet access is more common in households with higher incomes. The proportion of households in the highest income quintile with internet access was 95%, compared with 55% for households in the lowest income quintile.



Home internet access is also more common in households with children under 15 years of age (93%), compared with other households (74%). Additionally, the proportion of home internet access is higher for households in State and Territory capitals (82%) than households in other areas (74%).

Frequency of home internet access

Households with access to the internet were asked how frequently they accessed the internet at home. In 2010-11, most households (77%) were using the internet every day. A further 20% of households were using the internet at least weekly.




HOUSEHOLDS WITH ACCESS TO A HOME COMPUTER

The proportion of Australian households with access to a computer at home was 83% in 2010-11. As with internet access, computer access at home is more common for households: in the highest income quintile (96%); with children under 15 years of age (95%); and in State and Territory capitals (85%).

Household access to a computer at home by State or Territory ranged from 91% for the Australian Capital Territory to 76% for Tasmania.
