ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This publication presents results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) national Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation Survey, conducted from July 2011 to June 2012 using the ABS Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS). The survey collected data about the characteristics of people aged 15 years and over who participated in sport and physical recreation activities as players, competitors and in other physically active roles. Involvements in non-playing roles such as coaches, umpires and club officials were excluded from the data. The survey also collected data about the type of activities participated in, the frequency of participation, whether it was organised by a club, association or some other organisation and the facilities used.
This publication includes a range of data tables which are available in spreadsheet format from the Downloads tab. A brief summary of the findings from the survey is included in the Summary tab. Supporting this data are Explanatory Notes, a Technical Note and a Glossary which provide information on the concepts and methods used in the survey, reliability of the results and definitions. This information can be accessed from the Explanatory Notes tab. Differences between data items highlighted in the summary of findings are statistically significant (refer to the Significance Testing section of the Technical Note).
This is the third Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation Survey conducted as part of the MPHS. Time series data are included to compare the 2011–12 results with the 2005–06 and 2009–10 surveys. Sport and physical recreation data have also been collected in the General Social Survey in 2002, 2006 and 2010, and from 1993 to 2000 using the Population Survey Monitor. Every three years, from 2001 to 2010, the ABS also collected data on involvement in organised sport and physical activities covering both playing and non-playing roles. Caution should be exercised when making comparisons across the other surveys as the collection methodology and the questions asked may differ. For more information, see the Data Comparability section in the Explanatory Notes. Information about ABS activities in the field of sport and physical recreation statistics is available from the Sport and Physical Recreation Topics @ a Glance web page.
This publication was made possible with funding assistance from the Committee of Australian Sport and Recreation Officials (CASRO).
As estimates have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of component items and the published total. Published percentages are calculated prior to rounding and therefore some discrepancy may occur between these percentages and those that could be calculated from the rounded figures.
