Qld has fastest growing population in 2000

Queensland had the fastest population growth rate of all States in 2000, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication Population by Age and Sex, Queensland, 30 June 2000 released today.

The growth rate in Queensland of 1.7% was significantly higher than the national growth rate of 1.2% and raised the State population to 3.6 million, or 18.6% of the Australian population.

The group aged over 65 years experienced the highest rate of growth in Queensland for the five years to June 2000, and this age group now represents 11.5% of the total Queensland population. Wide Bay-Burnett and Moreton Statistical Divisions contained the highest proportions of older people. The median age of the Queensland population (the point at which half the population is older and half is younger) has increased from 28.7 years in 1980 to 34.6 years in 2000.

Children (people aged under 15 years) made up 21.2% of Queensland's population in 2000 compared with 22.2% in 1995. The North West Statistical Division had the highest proportion of children with 26.1%, while Moreton Statistical Division had the lowest with 19.8%.

Queensland had a sex ratio of 100.1 males for every 100 females in 2000, higher than the Australian sex ratio of 99.2. The North West Statistical Division had the highest sex ratio in Queensland, with 118.5 males for every 100 females.

Queensland's population is concentrated in the south-eastern corner of the State in the Brisbane and Moreton Statistical Divisions, which have 45.6% and 19.5% of the population, respectively. The mainly pastoral areas in the west of the State are sparsely populated, with the North West, South West and Central West Statistical Divisions collectively containing only 2.1% of the State's population.
