Purpose

To provide data on the distribution and composition of employee earnings and hours paid for employees in Australia
and, from May 2000, how pay is determined for employees in different industries, occupations, states and sectors.

Description

This survey collects information on the distribution and composition of weekly earnings and hours of employees. An annual sample of approximately 9,000 employers is selected from the ABS Register of Businesses. A further sample of approximately 59,000
employees is selected from the businesses originally selected.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire.


Data Detail

Distribution and composition of earnings and hours of employees are classified by:

  • Sex;
  • Age (under 18 years, 18 to under 21 years, 21 years and over);
  • Paid as Adult/junior;
  • Industry;
  • Occupation;
  • State
  • Sector; and
  • Size of firm.

Earnings are dissected into:
  • Base pay;
  • Payment by measured result (e.g. piecework);
  • Overtime pay; and
  • Total pay.

Methods of setting pay (e.g. Individual agreement, Collective agreement or Award). This is available by:
  • State
  • Occupation
  • Industry
  • Sector

Data are available for persons employed in the transport and storage industry.

Australia, States and Territories.


Frequency of Data
Availability
The survey has been conducted biennially from 1996.


Historical Data

Annual data are available for 1983 and from 1985-1996.
