OVERVIEW
The Apparent Consumption of Alcohol collection contains estimates of apparent alcohol consumption based on the availability of alcohol in Australia. Estimates of total quantity available for consumption and apparent per person consumption of beer and wine for persons aged 15 years are included for both the products themselves and in terms of pure alcohol. Estimates relating to spirits are available in terms of pure alcohol only.
PURPOSE
This collection has been prepared to assist Government monitor the apparent consumption of alcohol in Australia.
SCOPE
The scope includes beer, wine and spirits available for consumption.
DATA DETAIL
Conceptual framework
'Available for consumption' data are derived using information relating to supply. In the case of beer and spirits, supply is obtained by combining quantity measures of import data and excise data on Australian production. For wine, supply is derived by combining quantity measures of import data and the domestic sales of Australian produced wine. As a result, data are an approximate estimate of alcohol available for consumption. No adjustment is made for change in stocks and all alcohol available for consumption in a particular year is assumed to have been consumed in that year.
Main outputs
The main data items are;
Beer - litres of beer, available for consumption, by beer strength
- apparent per person consumption (aged 15 years and over), measured in litres of beer, by beer strength
- litres of alcohol contained in beer, available for consumption
- apparent per person consumption (aged 15 years and over), measured in litres of alcohol contained in beer.
Wine - available for consumption, by wine type
- apparent per person consumption (aged 15 years and over), by wine type
- litres of alcohol contained in wine, available for consumption
- apparent per person consumption (aged 15 years and over), measured in litres of alcohol contained in wine.
Spirits - litres of alcohol contained in spirits, available for consumption
- apparent per person consumption (aged 15 years and over), measured in litres of alcohol contained in spirits.
Classifications
Data is published on a 01 July to 30 June year basis.
Apparent consumption data is calculated by using the Estimated Resident Population of persons aged 15 years and over in Australia at 31 December each year.

Following the decision to cease the Apparent Consumption of Foodsuffs, Australia series, the Apparent Consumption of Alcohol data set was compiled to provide a continuing time series of alcohol consumption data. The 'available for consumption' data contained in this series is directly comparable with alcohol consumption data published in Apparent Consumption of Foodstuffs, Australia (cat no 4306.0) for the years 1989-90 and onwards.
DATA AVAILABILITY
