Release of these publications is not planned beyond the September reference period. Therefore, the final release of Stocks of Grain Held by Bulk Handling Companies and Grain Traders, Australia (cat. no. 7122.0.55.001) is planned for 17 October 2012, and the final release of Wheat Stocks and Exports, Australia (cat. no. 7307.0) is planned for 9 November 2012.

Wheat grain stored, Australia

  • Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain in September 2012 decreased by 2 million tonnes (22%) to 7.1 million tonnes since August 2012. This was 1.2 million tonnes (14%) lower than in September 2011.

Wheat grain stored by state
  • All states recorded a decrease in stocks of wheat grain stored in September 2012. With a decrease of 892 thousand tonnes (22%) from August 2012 Western Australia registered the biggest fall of wheat grain stocks.
  • The largest quantity of wheat grain was held in Western Australia with 3.1 million tonnes that accounted for 44% of the Australian total. New South Wales (including ACT) was next largest with 1.8 million tonnes contributing 25% of national stocks.

Wheat grain stored by grade


  • The stocks of wheat grain stored in 2011-12 are generally of a better quality than in 2010-11, which has consequentially lifted the ratio of milling grade wheat grain to feed grade wheat grain this season. In September 2012 the ratio of milling to feed grade wheat grain was 2.3:1 while September 2011 ratio was 1.1:1.
  • Stocks of wheat grain for milling in September 2012 were 4.9 million tonnes which was 69% of all grain stored. This was a decline of 1.9 million tonnes (or 28%) since August 2012 and an increase of 686 thousand tonnes (16%) compared to September 2011.
  • At the end of September 2012, feed grade wheat grain stocks were 2.2 million tonnes (31% of all grain stored) which was a decrease of 92 thousand tonnes (4%) from August 2012. Compared to September 2011 feed grade wheat grain stocks were down by 1.8 million tonnes (46%).
