A regional perspective on South Australia: ABS

The average value of residential property sales increased by nearly two-thirds (65%) in South Australia over the five years to June 2003, according to regional analysis released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

Average property prices increased faster in metropolitan Adelaide (up 68%) than in regional South Australia (up 59%) over this period.

The highest average residential property sale prices were recorded in Unley ($453,200), Walkerville ($446,300) and Burnside ($377,100) during 2003. The lowest prices were recorded in Peterborough ($41,000) and Coober Pedy ($47,100).

Other highlights from the publication Regional Statistics, South Australia, 2004 include:
  • The highest unemployment rates were in the Whyalla Statistical Subdivision (SSD) (13%), Pirie SSD and the Far North SSD (both 11%) during June quarter 2003. The lowest unemployment rates were in the Upper South East SSD (2%), Mt Lofty Ranges SSD (2%) and Barossa SSD (3%). Statewide, the unemployment rate was 6%.
  • The fastest population decreases in 2002-03 were in Karoonda East Murray (down 4%) and Coober Pedy (down 3%), The fastest population increases were in Light (up 5%), Victor Harbor and Alexandrina (both up 3%).
  • The crude birth rate was higher in regional South Australia (11.7 births per 1,000 population) than metropolitan Adelaide (11.3 births) during 2002–2003. The total number of births statewide fell to 17,242 births in 2002–03, 239 less births than in the previous year.
  • The highest average individual annual taxable incomes during 2001–02 were in the local government areas of Roxby Downs ($53,098), Barunga West ($46,290), Lower Eyre Peninsula ($42,734) and Kimba ($42,353). The lowest incomes were recorded in Ceduna ($30,262), Murray Bridge ($30,377) and Yankalilla ($30,672).
  • The regional areas with the largest increases in new motor vehicle sales in 2002–2003 were Light (up 91 sales to 325), Berri and Barmera (both up 73 sales to 505) and Port Lincoln (up 52 sales to 403). In Adelaide, Playford (up 938 sales to 3,381) and Mitcham (up 763 sales to 3,832) had the largest increases in new motor vehicle sales over the same period.
