Fewer victims of crime in the ACT during 2004: ABS

The recorded number of victims of crime fell 18% in the ACT between 2003 and 2004, according to new analysis released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

The number of victims of theft in the ACT fell to 10,086 people in 2004, down 25% from 2003. Of these, 1,746 people were victims of motor vehicle theft (down 30%).

Numbers have also declined for victims of all other theft categories (see media note), down 24% to 8,340 victims in 2004. This figure is the lowest since 1995.

The recorded number of victims of robbery in the ACT increased by 8% in 2004, to 218 people.

In this group, the victims of armed robbery increased 56%, from 68 to 106 people. However, victims of unarmed robbery fell 16%, from 134 to 112 people.
