AVCC re-signs ABS agreement

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE - ABS AND AUSTRALIAN VICE-CHANCELLORS' COMMITTEE (AVCC)

The Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (AVCC) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have signed a new agreement to continue providing online ABS statistics to Australian university researchers and students.

The AVCC/ABS AusStats agreement delivers desktop access to thousands of web pages of ABS data, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for research and teaching purposes at 38 Australian universities that are members of the AVCC. The CURFs (Confidentialised Unit Record Files) agreement provides access for researchers in 32 participating AVCC Australian universities to the most detailed statistical information available from the ABS.

Recognising the value offered by the agreements, Chief Executive Officer of the AVCC John Mullarvey said he was very happy to be signing a fourth agreement with the ABS, which will run until December 2007.

AusStats provides access to more than 2,000 ABS publications, time series data and tables (over 90,000 series in spreadsheet format), metadata (documentation of surveys, concepts and data items), economic models and 2001 Census Basic Community Profiles. New data is added as it becomes available with daily updating of significant economic and social data.

The Australian Statistician, Dennis Trewin, said that the agreement accords with the ABS goal of making data more accessible to university staff and students for research and teaching. This, in turn, supports more informed decision making within the university sector, government and the community.
